People Versus Larry Flynt (the)

Larry Flynt is the hedonistic, obnoxious, and indefatigable publisher of the porno magazine "Hustler"; this filmed biography of his work shows him trying to make his living by publishing the magazine, and of how that becomes a battle to protect freedom of speech for everyone in the U.S..

Strip club owner Larry Flynt and his wife, Althea, create a pornographic magazine that flaunts social morals and taboos, which not only brings the Flynts millions of dollars but also the wrath of so-called "decent people." Flynt and his attorney are hauled into courtrooms all over the country to answer criminal and civil charges. After an assassination attempt, Flynt is paralyzed, drug addicted, mentally ill, and worried by Althea's failing health.

This movie has it all: From humble beginnings peddling moonshine, to a multi-million dollar publishing empire, Flynt -- now confined to a wheelchair -- is imprisoned, after being sued by his nemesis, Jerry Falwell.

After watching this movie, you might know exactly who Larry Flynt is, and what he stands for: freedom of speech. Some people consider him perverted, but others praise what they see as his patriotism. The movie has a genuine plot, beyond just Flynt's life, and, for a biography, it has superb acting, especially by the three main characters.

The movie fails, however,, to explore why Flynt did what he did and believes so strongly in in what he does. His character is sympathetic, but not fully understandable. Overall, a very good drama. Recommended if you can stand what the movie shows, have an open mind, and aren't easily offended but "girlie" photographs, the movie offers an inside view of free-speech prosecution, and of the life of a complicated man.
